X wont start-Debian woody

I downloaded woody a little at a time and got the
base system working fine. Now I`ve loaded in the
x system and got it configured but it wont start.
I`ve run xf86config several times. The error messages
I get are "no devices detected" and "no screens found".
The xf86config file shows the correct video driver.
I added all the packages listed at the Debian website.
Do I need something else? All help appreciated.
