X won't start: "Fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices" !

I've never used a Linux system before; now I'm experiencing dificulties installing Debian 3.0r0 using the 2.4 kernel. I intended to use the 2.4 kernel, because I have a Logitech USB-mouse (optical) and a SB Audigy soundcard. Since I read USB-support was better with the 2.4 kernel this seemed a logical choice.

However, when the X server is started the screen flickers a few times, after which it generates the following error-message:
"Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices"

I know very little about the Linux (yet

Comments:

I've already turned of the "kernel framebuffer" because that caused problems when I tried to run Debian 3.0 with the 2.2 kernel. The Xserver worked fine then, but nOt with kernel 2.4.
I was confused while installing using kernel 2.4, 'cause I was presented with a lot more optional modules except for the few in the "2.2 installation". I don't know exactly which modules I need. Maybe somewhere in the "module-selection"-section is the problem?? (I really don't know :P)

From the log, the problem seem related to the mouse.

Check if you have this:

/dev/input/mice
/dev/gpmdata

Try to configure Xwindow again with another type of mouse (in your case you have selected a logitech ps/2?)

Also, if you are using gpm, stop it and see if this help.

As for now, this is my (additional)hardware-config:

- Radeon 64 DDR (one of the earlier models, so I guess no all-in-wonder)
- Iiyama Vision Master Pro 410HT
- Logitech Mouseman Optical (USB)
- SB Audigy (normal model)

I thought that only choosing gpm would enable the use of an USB-mouse, but is that so? .. What should I choose to enable USB-mouse support?
I believe I somewhere read about a certain config of gpm which when configged correctly "repeated"

the mouse input so it could be used in the bash as well as in the desktop environments... Is that so? I'll try to look that up on debianhelp.org...

As far as I'm aware, gpm is only used in the text environment. If you're gonna be spending any time with no X running, then yeah, enable it. If, however, you're gonna be spending all your time in X (and I include virtual console sessions, such as Konsole, Eterm, Aterm, Xterm, etc, as being X), then I wouldn't run gpm... it can sometimes cause problems.

Okay, so if the only console-windows I would be actually working in would be the console-windows emulated by X (for example a 'bash' in Gnome); then enabling gpm would be useless? Well, in that case... I probably won't be needing it.

But your saying that using the command-line just after the startup (I don't know how this is called), without using 'startx', one can actually use the mouse

If that's so, then w0w I must say I'm surprised..
Or did I misinterpret your remark?

Oh and, which mouse should I choose then in the install-menu? No gpm probably then, but which one is the Logitech Mouseman Optical USB? Does perhaps anybody use a similar mouse?

Please check if you have support for usb devices in the kernel.

0_o I have found this in the Input Core Support section,
when you configure the kernel in version 2.4.18:

CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV:

Say Y here if you want your USB HID mouse (or ADB mouse handled by
the input layer) to be accessible as char devices 13:32+ -
/dev/input/mouseX and 13:63 - /dev/input/mice as an emulated ImPS/2
mouse. That way, all user space programs will be able to use your
mouse.

This is the same mouse protocol (ImPS/2) that is show in your logs,
so please check if you have this option compiled in the kernel.

I dont know if the configuration in Debian is the same, but
in my case, to select other mouse in Slackware 8.0, i use the program:

/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config

the options are:

1. Microsoft compatible (2-button protocol)
2. Mouse Systems (3-button protocol)
3. Bus Mouse
4. PS/2 Mouse
5. Logitech Mouse (serial, old type, Logitech protocol)
6. Logitech MouseMan (Microsoft compatible)
7. MM Series
8. MM HitTablet
9. Microsoft IntelliMouse

So option 6 can be the correct.

Today, I had an enlightning conversation with a Linux-user in my study-soceity and he told me how to fix my mouse-/startx-problem.

Apparently, it was indeed the mouse that caused startx to fail; some of the required modules were not loaded.

This is how I fixed it:

Well, after this and a short reboot ..the system started just fine!

Strangely enough I do not experience the weird "keyboard mistypes" (mentioned earlier) when in Gnome; my '|" just displays normally.
