X won't recognize keyboard inputs.

I am running Gentoo on a Fujitsu Lifebook T-series. When I boot up X to the I3-wm it gives me a choice between configuration options. However I cannot choose either of these options as my X/I3 doesn't recognize my pressing of either the escape or enter keys. I do have evdev enabled in my kernel, and the terminal recognizes both of those keys.

Here is the contents of my 30-keyboard.conf:
https://bpaste.net/show/29486e6b0bf7

P.S: Is it normal to have to create your own xorg.conf.d folder? Because there wasn't one in /etc/X11 before I created one to house the keyboard configuration file.

P.P.S: Sorry if this is in the wrong section; newbie and software seem to serve the same purpose, and I don't think is a gentoo specific problem and thusly deserving to be posted in that section.
Edit: I took this question to the gentoo IRC and someone pointed out an error in my make.conf. After I fixed that spelling error, and recompiled the xorg modules, the keyboard worked!

are you sure you actually need that 30-keyboard.conf file?
is your keyboard somehow non-standard or why did you do it?

how do you start X & i3?

can you use your keyboard in a tty? (ctrl-alt-f2)
on my setup, the escape key behaves thusly in tty's: press escape, the next keypress does not show, only the one after that.

I think that I require the configuration file, as I'm using a non-standard keyboard [1]. Unfortunately I could not find th name of the specific keyboard variant I was using, so I just went with the variant that had the manufacturers name (Fujitsu) in the title.

To enter X I run startx from the tty (which I boot into). This also starts I3, as I have inserted the "exec I3" into my xinitrc file [2].

The keyboard in tty works fine, and esc behaves in exactly the way you describe.

that keyboard looks like a normal laptop/netbook keyboard to me.
have you tried removing that "30-keyboard.conf" file and restarting your machine?

why is this marked solved? if it is, please share your solution. others will benefit.
