It sounds like there is no XF86config file available. look in /etc/X11/XF86Config if there is nothing there, you will need to run /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config to set it up. If it is there, it sounds like it wasn't set up properly so running xf86config again won't hurt anything.
Before you run it though, it will help to know monitor sync rates and type of graphics card you have installed.
