X Windows help please
 

Ok, I took the plunge and installed Linux Redhat 7.3 dual boot on my thinkpad. If everything does well Bill won't be getting my money anymore:)

Ok, here is my question:

I installed X Windows and it works! However, I can't get the resolution any higher then 640 x 480 or something like that. Everything is SO big and I really like my res to be around 1028 x 768 or larger. I think this is controlled by selecting the correct display type that I have no idea what to select. Out of about 30 different types I tried only 1 worked. The small resolution setting.

This is my hardware settings. Mabey somebody can quide me in the correct direction.

IBM thinkpad R31

Intel 830 display adapter (Linux probed this OK using the 810)
1.13 Ghz CPU
40 GB HDD
DVD/CDRW (Don't need to burn CD's yet cause I got a dual boot)
Eth0 - this works fine

manually tweaked the X config file eh? well at least you know that you'd be able to handle X on any distro now ;)

actually for redhat, there's something called Xconfigurator. you could have tried that if you installed it. it's a little more intuitive. but well, now it won't make a difference ;)

Thanks. Actually I tried the Xconfigurator but was only able to get the smallest resolution from that. Manually tweeking with XF86config-4 worked. It's been a couple of years sience I used Linux but I remember having to install the FBDev on some of IBM's servers.

oh i see... did the "ctrl alt + / ctrl alt -" thing work before you tweaked the file? (sorry hope i don't look too much like beating a dead horse)

"ctrl alt + / ctrl alt -" , that a new one to me. Does that make the screen bigger/smaller? Anyhow, I got X working so pretty happy now. Just trying to figure out what's up with the mouse. It likes to jump around. I live almost right next to Redhat, mabey I should go pay them a visit :-) I work in the RTP, NC area where Redhat is from :-)

if i lived so near to redhat, i'd be sure to stroll by one day to take a look. ;)

as for the "ctrl alt +" and "ctrl alt -", it's hard to explain. the best thing is to see it for yourself(though it'd be quite a meaningless things to do ;) ). basically, either by tweaking the X config file or using Xconfigurator, you can get your monitor to support more than one screen resolution. you can cycle through the screen resolution by simply doing "ctrl alt +" or "ctrl alt -" thing. it has this virtual size thing that's difficult/too long to explain. if you're feeling bored one day, you can try. but remember to back up your xf86config file first just in case anything goes wrong and you can't remember how it was originally... :D
