X windows fails to load [FC2, X11]
Hi,
For some reason X windows will not load on my Fedora 2 box with X11 and GNOME desktop. It is bound to be something I did but I do not know where to start looking for an indication of what the problem might be. I have looked in /var/log/boot.log and there is nothing wrong there. I have used the Rescue CD provided with the distro to change the default runlevel in inittab to 3 which is multiuser, non-X mode. Is there a boot log for X? Thanks |
what happens when you run startx in runlevel 3?

Same thing, as root or as normal user. X hangs before the splash screen where all the services load up.

Can anybody help?
What should be my first steps to finding out what is wrong? I am totally stuck. |
There is a separate log for X-windows in /var/log.
You may of inadvertently goofed up the video settings for X windows. First check the log. If there isn't an indication of a missing or bad file, then perhaps try setting up video card and monitor settings again. I have found it useful to comment out the video driver line in the XF86Config file and replace it with 'vesa'. This driver will work with almost every card you might have. This done, then work on the monitor and resolution settings. Good Luck! |
