X Window Not working

I'm trying to run netbeans IDE, but I'm having trouble getting the X Window display to work correctly.

I have Centos 6 running on a remote virtual server. I'm connecting via SSH using Putty (X11 forwarding is enabled). I have Xming running on my local windows machine.

I set $DISPLAY = 10. When I try to run something simple like Firefox to test the X windows I get the following:

ERROR: Cannot open display 10

I'm pretty new to Linux so I'm probably missing something fundamental. Any thoughts or suggestions?

10 is an invalid setting for DISPLAY. Probably :10 works, but I'm not really sure

are you sure the Xwindows already working before you make a remote desktop connection?
how about rdp or vnc?

That's exactly my line of thinking but I wasn't sure what to check for. I'm at work right now but I'll look for rdp and/or vnc when I get home. Thanks!!
