Unhappy x server problems

Mandrake 9.0 & Win XP Home
AMD XP 1800+ (1.5Ghz)
MSI GeForce4 ti4200-td (64MB DDR)
plug and play monitor
20GB linux partiton.

when I was installing Mandy It went fine until the setting up of x.
There was no option that would work. The all said (EE)No devices detected. The graphics card and monitor worked before on a mandy 8.2 and Win XP. I just ignored it and finished the setp. When Linux started x didn't start, so I ran Xf86config and chose the options that fitted my setup. I restarted and still x won't start. I am writing this in Win XP. Please Help me get off Micro$hite and back to Linux. If you would like somemore details, please ask.

Thanks in advance.

what video card are you using(if it has an nvidia chipset you'll need drivers)? what kind of monitor (horiz/vert sync rates?) which version of XFree86 (4.2.0? 4.2.1?) A few more specs would be a good thing to start with.

you might try configuring your card as a geforce2 as a quick fix and then downloading the nvidia drivers

I have now found an option to use a custom monitor. I can now start x and I am trying to install the nvidia drivers as I speak. I used the VESA setting to begin with to start up x.

Another Problem

Another problem that I have been having is to do with my sound card.

It is creative Sound Blaster live! 5.1 so I installed the driver letter by letter, but during boot up it says that it can't initialize because soundcore.o is already running. but when mandrake starts and I try to remove soundcore, it says there is no module running called sound core.

Any help would be appreciated
