Question X server problem

Hello everone,
I am facing a couple of problems that I would like to share with this community.
1) While the installation of RH 8.0, I set it to boot to runlevel 3, but now when I set it to boot to X-windows(/etc/inittab file), it boots smoothly to x-windows, but suddenly when I press ctrl+alt+F(x) for accessing any terminal, all opened programs in the X-windows are closed and it logs me out. Unable to understand this problem?? any suggestions on this.
2) ummm...I want to know that If I want to add some program to the startup of RH 8.0, what should I be looking for?? probably I should have googled it, but little confused with the keywords...
Thanks in advance for any help...
ommy
