X Server crashes / Suse 9.1

Hey Folks!

Got big problems to get started with Linux. KDE, Gnome and Window Maker
use to crash, when I try to run an application. Some picture viewer, media player or just accesses on NTFS Drives can cause bad looking crashes: No error message- just flickering stripes on the screen and a frozen system. Can it be a driver problem? I´m using a Nvidia Geforce 440MX se and an Athlon CPU.

Thanks for help!

Flickering stripes are usually connected with graphic card driver or X. If your system is not fully upgraded, download all updates and install them. Also check latest Nvidia driver (are you using one from NVidia or the generic one?).

hi there,

you wrote :" No error message- just flickering stripes on the screen and a frozen system. "

when you see that, can you get out of it with ctl-alt-F6 ( or -F5....-F1 ) ?
you should get a login-prompt, and then you can look for errors in the log's.
if not, it might be a hardware-issue. ( running the wrong driver shouldn't
take down the whole system ??? )
