X server???

Hi everybody,
Well how are you all doing today? I am doing fine. Well enough of that and down to the point and the problem that i am having. I just did a complete reinstall of my RED HAT LINUX 9 operating system. Well after i am completely logged in i try to change the display on my screen to a higher resolution than 800x600 to a resolution that is 1024x768. Well after i apply the settings it tells me that i need to logout and restart the computer and restart the X SERVER which i have no idea how to restart the X SERVER?! I kind of have a idea what the X server is and what it does?. From the looks of it when i restart linux it does not restart the X SERVER from the bios that i get when it restarts. So if somebody out there has any ideas on how i could save my setting of 1024x768 resolution on the screen and then logout and restart the X SERVER i would really appreciate your input please!!. Oh by the way i installed the Gnome version of linux 9 this time i think?.
