x server

i have a problem with the x-server. yesterday i installed some window-managers(enlightenment, fluxbox). now i want to try them but when i enter fluxbox i get(BaseDisplay::BaseDisplay: connection to x Server failed) a similar message appears when i try enlightenment. i used the startx command and entered enlightenment in one of the console windows but then it tells me another window manager is already running. why does it ask me to start the x server and then tells me that it cant run with it? what am i doing wrong?

there are 2 different parts to an X server

X, which is the basic login screen you get, and

GUI, like gnome, kde, or the other ones you named, my thinking is that X is not properly allowing these GUI environments to launch, so i dont know there, but if you select your graphical environment from the menu, it should boot

sorry for being vague

maybe you did some wrong configuring the x-server. Post some more detailed error messages (full log of starting the x-server in /var/log/XFree86.0.log) and perhaps usefull parts of your xfree86configuration file (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4). Maybe anyone can help with that information... Maybe you can help yourself out now that you know this .
