Yo! starcyber.
Linux is the kernel that many distros use to comunicate software applications with the hardware of your computer. To be able to help you, you should let us know what distro you installed in your computer. Perhaps some parts of your computer are not detected by the kernel or might require some tweaking.
Perhaps a different distro will run better in your computer we dont know that yet.

Good luck to you.

Hi starcyber,

as TroN-0074 pointed out, Linux is just the kernel, which is now at version 3.2. However 10.04 look like a version of Ubuntu, is that it!?!?
I am just gessuing: you might have a problem with the configuration of Xorg. A quick googling brought up this (check post #4), I hope it can help.

Anyway, if you let us know a bit more in detail the specification of your compaq may be usefull.

Good luck.

According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ick_Meerkat.29 support for Ubuntu 10 was dropped this month; try latest (v12).
