x problem

I set X through x86config. I typed in startx. The Gnome desktop came up, but the desk top is to large for my screen. Meaning that only about 1/4 of the GNOME desktop will fit on my monitor, leaving me to move the cursor to the edge of the screen for the desktop to scroll over. Can I change the whole desk top to fit on my monitor with the xvidtune command? A screen popped up saying I could damage my monitor is configured wrong.

Are you using Slack? I try XF86Setup 1st and then fall back
when that fails.

You select you color depth.
Select you resolution : 333 ( I pick one for each depth)
The next question is somthing about size of virtual screens or desktops answer "n"

That will keep you virtual deskop the same size as you screen.

As far as damaging you monitor, I've never done it in 7 years. Start with conservative settings when in dought.

256 colors, 800x600 resoution, generic SVGA card settins.
and work you way up.
