X Free 86 Display problems...
 
I seem to have X installed, but now I have some more problems. I run Xfree86setup, from /usr/X11R6/bin and it sets up X. Ok, great, but then when I do startx I get this:

(EE)SIS(0):vm86() syscall generated signal 4
mod probe:can't locate sis
[drm]failed to load kernel module "sis"
(EE)SIS(0):[dri]DRIScanInit failed Disabling DRI

Fatal Server Error: Could not open default font 'fixed'

Now, obviously there's a problem locating the video card/drivers, right? Here's my setup:

Slackware 8.0 (setup on DOS partition through Zipslack...I'm too afraid to try and repartition the HD, as it contains alot of important things..)
XFree86 (latest version, 4.2.0 I believe, downloaded the required packs as reccommended at slackware's website.)
the video card is an integrated SiS 530 with interchangable allocation of video memory, 2mb, 4mb, 8mb, through sharing with ram.

I maybe wrong, but I'm sensing that this hardware is unsupported, but if there is ANY way I can make this work, I would like to know.
This is only my first week using Linux, and this fourm has been the only help to me so far. As a seasoned Windows user I don't understand many of the Linux system commands quite yet, so the most simple, dumbed down answer as possible would be greatly appreciated.

there's an "sis" driver that runs your card - apparently X can't find it. i'm not sure how it's setup, but you might need to find the module and get it in the modules directory for the kernel. do you have the sis driver?

Run pkgtool and select view option. Select XFree86 and scroll through its files looking for ' sis '. If you find any, write down their complete path and then go see if they are there and that they are not zero byte files. I checked the XFree86 website and 4.2.0 supports the sis 530.

I found the file, it's in the following directory, both in the Xfree86 package and on my hard drive:
/lib/modules/2.4.17/kernel/drivers/char/drm/

the file name is sis.o and it has a file size of 67564 bytes in both the package and on my computer. Should I delete all the other video card drivers in that directory? Just a thought...might help?

On my zipslack installation, my cirrus module is in the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers folder. Check to see if your sis.o driver is there. If it isn't, you could copy it there and then try again.

Well....I moved it, and it's in that directory. I run xfree86setup, it goes through it's thing, and I get the same error. I'm guessing I'll have to manually edit my config file...how would I go about doing it?

I've never edited an XF86Config file. Let's check to see if the default module path is same as I gave you ( /usr/X11R6/lib/modules ). Look in the XF86Config file, mine is in /etc/X11, for the line starting with ' ModulePath ' and see if it matches the one above.

Is the sis.o file the only file you found that had sis in it? On my system, the driver is named sis_drv.o. I have version 4.1.0 installed.

Instead of running XF86setup, try running xf86config. It's the text install version. You could also try renaming the XF86Config file to XF86Config.old and see if XF86setup or xf86config will create a new XF86Config file for you.

run lsmod and see if your sis-module is listed.
If it's not, try loading it with insmod modulename.

Yes, I have the sis_drv.o file. I'll have to check the path...
However, I reconfigured X, and I almost have it working (i think!). Instead of getting an error that says it can't find the module i get this message

(EE)SIS(0): um86 () syscall generated signal 4
could not init font path element /usr/X1R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
Removing from list!

Fatal Server Error:
Could not open default fond 'fixed'

I know I installed the font packs! What the heck is up with this now? And what is a "signal 4"?????

I have a problem with the speedo fonts too. It's not able to initialize them. I don't know what the problem is.

Are you sure you d/l the standard fonts? I think the package name was xfnts.tgz. In the XF86Config file, there is a section that lists the paths to all the fonts. Check to make sure they are pointing to fonts location.

Ok, I downloaded the xfnts.tgz package... what path should they install to because I get the same message.

My font path is:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts

When you install the packages from Slackware, they should install into the correct folders. Here's a copy of my XF86Config file. Maybe this will help you.

I have the base KDE files installed, and I'm having some problems... I installed the base set, the required libs, the audio driver, the docs, the addons, and a few other packages, but when I run startx I get errors related to KDE. They are missing shared librarys....I don't know where to start... is there a setup program that I can run from the console like xf86config, only for KDE? I know I can switch my desktop environments by using xwmconfig. Do I start KDE by running startkde. Would that help any? Any help would be great because I don't get any errors when using installpkg to install the packages I d/l.
