I'm new to linux, having deleted NT from my pc. I have installed a very small distro called mulinux, and when i run X i can only get 640x480. I only have a crappy GD5422 card and a elonex svga monitor, and basically have 2 questions 1) in windows my monitor goes to beyond 800x600 (which is the resolution i would like) so i assume it should do in linux. Does the cirrus logic GD54 driver not support higher resolutions?, and 2) where can i find the correct monitor specifications for H_SYNC, V_SYNC etc, I have tried searching for them on google for about an hour now, and i have tried the monitor manufacturers website (from fcc-id) with no luck, is there a site or a program that can help me?
Thanks

what is your distro? depending on the distro you should (remember i did say should) be able to configure the resolution settings through the desktop. Sure there is probably a way to do it in console, but i don't know of it. Hope that helps

you should be able to run xf86config to change your settings for X. if not look for a file called XF86Config in your /etc/X11 directory and edit that file to accomodate what resolution you want to use.

:smash:

Ok sorry, I use mulinux. I finally got the VGA_16 sevrver to work in 800x600, but whenever i try to run the SVGA one, i just get distortion on the screen. Not distortion like when you set the resolution to high, but more like when directx fucks your computer up and crashes out a game leaving horrible messes all over it. I know that my card and monitor are SVGA, so i guess i'll just keep entering different modelines in the hope that i get it right again

It looks like you specified Refresh rates too high. Try putting them lower.

Well i sat up virtually all night trying different refresh rates, modelines and anything else i can think of, with no luck, i just get a garbled display with the SVGA server when its at 640x480, 800x600, 700x500, and i even tried 400x300. I dont get the same problem when using the VNC server which is strange, though i still have to figure that out (im rather new to this, i'm usd to windows doing everything for me, though i am learning a lot about how my computer actually works, which is fun. Is it possible that its a problem with the actual server? think i'll try downloading a new SVGA server and see...
