WuBi installation
 
I have windows vista in 160GB harddisk
C and D partition

i installed ubuntu 10.04 in my external hard disk (250Gb), in a 50GB partition

so i reboot my laptop and after that this GRUB RESCUE thing appear and i cant use either my Windows or ubuntu

GRUB RESCUE appear no matter whether the external is attached to laptop

i read some tuto and solutions but there are problems still

i referred to this

i reboot from the ubuntu CD, do the /mnt, /dev/sdb1 thing (my linux partition is sdb1)... step 7 does it mean type "sudo update-grub" in GRUB RESCUE mode? it cant read that.

really need help and sorry for any inconvenience. i'm not good in installation and trouble shooting

win29, you should have started a new thread - I have reported it to get it split out.
That guide is for a dual-boot (side-by-side) install, not a wubi install within Windows. I've never done wubi, I'll think on it.

It doesn't look like there is (good) support for booting an external drive with wubi. Especially as a standard install. If you have a Windows install disk I would suggest you restore the Windows boot-loader to the MBR, and make sure Win boots o.k.
Then uninstall wubi, and do a normal dual boot install onto the external - you'll need to free up some space, or allow the installer to resize (shrink) the external partitions.
See this technet article from Microsoft on how to restore the MBR. You should only need to do "bootrec /fixmbr"
