Wubi does not work with Vista. Is it so?

Hey all,

Just a day before out of curiosity tried to install Ubuntu under windows Vista. As I do not have my own machine with windows I borrowed uncle's Compaq laptop. It has got Vista Home basic pre-loaded and all partitions are NTFS formatted. I tried installing Ubuntu Jaunty that I had on a cd.
After almost install had completed it threw error "Permission Denied. Look at the log wubi-xxxx.log".
Googled a bit and some said either the cd was not good. I checked the media it was good. I could install from the media. So again googled. Again found that some had this problem solved by downloading the newer version of wubi. Went to wubi site and downloaded the newest available. But still the issue.
I should say that after googling I found these solutions but none was for Vista and were generic.
I want to know if there is any issue with installing Ubuntu under vista though not installing wont kill me but it would be nice to go home and use Ubuntu without partitioning the hard drive. And I should also note that this laptop does not belong to me and hence I would not definitely like to do anything with it.

Hello,
Yes wubi does work on Vista..My son installed it and it worked..He did defrag first though..He did not burn a cd but allowed wubi to run from the internet install..
I do not know any more details..
Goodluck,
jolphil

Edit: this was on a desktop computer...

I do not have a good enough internet connection to allow it to download the iso hence I am using the cd the I have. But still I will again try it today and do it after I have finished defrag.

chaitanya:

Wubi uses its own virtualization over vista and allocates its own space inside it (within vista partition) for Linux to run on, this poses two necessary issues to consider:
a) Wubi converts available space into linux formats; and
b) This space must be one that vista permits.
Issues revolve around above points.

So far that's what I remember when I used wubi. Not sure of other things.

Hope this helps.

Yeah agreed. But there is no reason why Vista should not permit this as I am not installing Ubuntu in C: drive. I am allocating a drive that does not contain much data. I have de fragmented it and still it does not install. It still keeps saying permission denied.
I did not use Vista much. So I do not have much information or knowledge about its working but it surely sucks in these parameters.
I will still keep trying and wait till my Kubuntu cd arrives from canonical and then try that cd. And if still vista does not allow then I will format the drive and install Ubuntu separately. That should not be much of an issue with me right now. Got some experience with.
Will keep updating you guys about it. Thanks a lot for your valuable comments.

I wonder if that has anything to do with it..My son used the C: drive and wubi created a folder on it..Does it need a primary, active drive to work...I wonder?

Nevermind, I do not know if that matters. Anyhow, I de-fraged the drive, used Gparted to reduce the drive size and installed Jaunty. I can not give much time to windows and keep waiting for Vista to boot and up taking its own time for each process to start up. And that too with 2gigs of ram. Its ridiculous.
