would love to switch to linux, but need help with sony xa300

I would love to completely switch to linux (I have installed linux many times in dual boot situations, all of which I found that I used windows more and ended up deleting the linux partition.)

I have an inspiron 5100 and have used fedora 5 and got most of the hardware running. My one problem is that I use this laptop in the car as both a navigation system and media player. I hook the laptop up to my car stereo through usb to a XA300 (its a input adapter for my head unit that accepts usb) This works fine in windows, but not plug and play in windows. That normally wouldn't be a problem, but I cannot find any help on this subject while searching.

I can use this in windows which means that there must be a driver for it (installs something when I plug it in). I have used ndiswrapper for a windows driver before, but is that only for network adapters? Is there a better way to get this working? Or am I doomed to run windows for this

I can't find any help on the net either...try setting it up like a usb speaker system and see if the output plays on the head unit. Otherwise I'm stumped.

is it really the xa300 that requires a driver or the usb audio output of your laptop? i don't have much info though but perhaps you can enable 'usb audio' in drivers/sound of the kernel config.

here's a sample procedure of an external usb audio adapter being setup: http://www.fuschlberger.net/usb-audio/

i just tried to make a research so i hope this can help you.

The XA-300 has RCA inputs doesn't it? You can get a Male to Male 1/8th inch to RCA cable and just plug it into your line out or headphone port on the laptop. Any reason you wouldn't want to do this?

The reason I dont want to use rca inputs is because if I run my laptop off of the inverter (often do as I use my computer in the car all day at work) then I will get line noise. If I use the usb connection then the signal stays digital and I dont get the line noise.

I will try setting it up as a usb audio and see what happens

Ok, fedora 5 must have the driver in the kernel or something. Last time I had tried it on fedora 4 and got nowhere. Now I have plugged it into fedora 5 and it's just plug and play (sort of). I have to manually tell the media player to use the usb speakers (shows up as burr brown) and it only works with beep media player, but it's a start.

Now to find a gps navigation solution.
