Would like recommendations for a distro
Hello there,
I am looking for a distro that would be good for booting quickly and performing basic tasks such as web browsing and music playing etc. I plan on dual booting this with my vista installation to provide a quick way to the basic tasks without having to wait for vista to boot, so i would perfer it to be able to be at a browser in 15-20 seconds or less. I was considering trying out tinycore linux, but also want some other suggestions. I'm open to anything you give to me. The problem is that I'm not very knowledgeable with the different distros and only know of the more popular ones. Hope you can suggest something that would fit my needs! :) Basic system specs: toshiba u300 laptop 1gb ram dual core 1.73 ghz intel proccesor Atheros ar5007eg wireless card <-gotta be compatible |
If you need a suggestion, the answer is always Ubuntu or Mint. Just toss a coin.

I am definitely not using ubuntu. If you read my post i explained i wanted a very basic distro to boot very quickly and do basic tasks. ubuntu is a full blown distro that boots no faster than vista.
to clarify, i want it as a secondary os to just quickly check an email or something. it would be used when the computer is off and i dont want to boot vista. i would still use vista for most things. |
I guess you could try out
http://www.browserlinux.com/ or http://www.slitaz.org/en/ or http://puppex.exton.net/ |
thanks rokytnji, i took a look at them and will try them all out soon. browserlinux looks pretty good.
in the meantime some more people can suggest some distros, the more the better! |

ubuntu is crapware anyway, but if you did want the "full-blown distro", debian itself is indeed a great choice! I think that what you might be looking for is *HERE*, and is likely exactly what you're looking for :) The Puppex distro that rokytnji mentioned above is also most excellent. Although both the Slax and Puppex spins work equally well from a USB flash or multiboot HDD environment, it sounds like you might benefit most by installing the one you choose onto a USB flash drive. That will provide you with the option of using it on any machine that happens to be laying around nearby. Very handy! I hope that helps :hattip: Kindest regards, . |
http://www.jolicloud.com/product
http://www.jolicloud.com/download Much like the google laptops, Joli just loads on a 'cloud' enabling you to just start it up and automatically be connected to web and web based apps ... and you can log into your desktop from anywhere simply by going to the jolicloud homepage. ... I've never used it myself so I can't vouch for it on a personal level ... But it does look interesting and may be right up your alley. :) |
Knoppix?

It also installs onto the HDD very easily in about 4 minutes, but beware: It will overwrite the entire hard drive. |
I will have to investigate the Hard Drive Issue
I have heard of people installing it on a HD although it is not recommended.
Knoppix is small and respected so I thought it might be an interesting idea. It has it's own nitche so it's not like reinventing the wheel again. :hattip: I'm not really sure what it's intended niche is besides being run from a Flash Drive. |
Thank for the suggestions all! I'm spending my time trying them all out and seeing which one I like the best.

Well if your willing to spend about $20usd on one, there is always Madriva's InstantOn, though personally I've never used it, my neighbor says he lives by it when he is out and abroad.

Sorry for the late reply everyone, but I've been busy lately...
Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think I want to spend anything looks good though. I have tried all I the recommendations and think that tiny core wasn't best choice. Thanks for all your help! |
