Working with PHP locally

I am relatively new to Linux, having used Windows for the longest time...

I was wondering what packages need to be installed (I am using Mandrake 9.1) to be able to work on PHP locally.

I cannot do it using my website as my school for some reason does not support PHP at least in regards to student web pages.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Install apache & php and you're on your way. You can use the manual on

Well, if you have installed apache you should also have php installed in your system.

Just switch to the super-user mode and type

" chkconfig --list | grep httpd "

If you get a line with various run levels, then apache is installed in your system & is ready to go.
