working on directories and files


i just installed linux. but i don't know which directory i have to use for my own person purpose, like downloading JDK and Tomcat something like that.

and if i want to share files with other user, how should i make configuration?

ideally.....

under /home/(your username) is the directory you store your personal files

under /opt is a place you can install new (optional) files you've downloaded and compiled

under /usr/local you can install program to use system wise (install as a root)

hum... i think these are the most basic idea normal unix system follow

but then again, you can do whatever you want because you can always set symbolic links for other users to lanuch the program heheh
