Working off-line with Ubuntu...

Hey there,my name is Michael and I'm new at working with Linux based systems.Currently I'm working with a Dell notebook that I installed Ubuntu10.10 on and am having real trouble grasping the method needed to install software and media codecs on it off line.I'm sure it can't be as diffucult as I'm making it and I'm going back to the Ubuntu support center to seek help there ,anything added would be greatly appreciated.I Love the fact of Linux being open and available for everyone and really want to learn it inside and out.I'm good with MS and like how the system takes over installations of apps, dosen't Linux work in a simular fashion?Or do I need to use a command line interface to acomplish installing the software that I need to build the system I want.I feel really stupid asking,I know I'm missing something obvious that's right in front of me,I'm also going to look into a DOS tutorial.
Thanks,take care all,
Michael

Find "Add/Remove Programs" or "Synaptic Package Manager" in your menus. See also "Software Sources".

What does your title have to do with the body of your post?

Quote:

how the system takes over installations of apps
What are you trying to say here?

Can you please use spaces after your punctuation?

Hi Michael,
Welcome to Linux Questions!
You're making it pretty difficult to add applications, etc, by using your system off line! Linux uses Repositories which are accessed on-line with a package manager like the Ubuntu Software centre or Synaptic Package Manager. You don't install them from CD as you might with MS products. Everything is accessed from the web. The package manager will solve any dependancies and add or delete your applications. Why do you want to update it off line? By not having it connected to the web you're losing one of it's major advantages over Windows software... i.e. All the software you want is in the same place! :D No jumping between suppliers!

Play Bonny! :hattip:
