Wont recognize install cd

Help! I have and old Compaq desktop, which won't boot off cd's. I formatted my drive before installing mandrake 8.2. I insert the boot disk, but i get the text installer which says the cd isn't in the tray. If someone could help me out I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanx

This will probably be the best for you.

If you have a Windows partition:

Copy the .iso's of your distro to the Windows partition under a newlyly created directory called say... mandrake (please make sure its a FAT32 or else there could be more trouble if its NTFS). From Windows with rawrite.exe, make a Linux boot disk. With the later distros of Suse, Mandrake, and Redhat you'll be given the option upon install about which medium you would like to install from. Choose Hard Disk. You'll need to supply a path like: /dev/hda1 the iso directory being /mandrake. This is an easy workaround.

If empty with no Windows:
You can boot with something like a rescue disk, with fdisk or cfdisk (if its still around) create a partition just big enough to hold the iso's. Format with make2fs /dev/hda1. Copy the iso's to it. Then like in above method do a hard disk install.

There are several other ways to get this done. Good luck.

Excalibur has been kind enough to point this out to LQ readers. I have found it very useful and might work for you as well.
