Probably because of YOU Updater updated linux kernel patch, which wasn't really recommended. But try repairing the system with SuSE DVD-rom.
Start with SUSE CD
Select installation
select repair installed system
select Automatic repair

There is also another issue.

If you have an older nvidea card, then updating the patch for the video driver can disable your system.

On the nvidea site there is info over the graphic cards that are NOT compatible with the last driver and how to get the right driver.

Suse does not look which card you have, it offers to update and that is it. The driver itself also does not check the card. So if you install you are in deep trouble.

You can give it a try.
I ruined 2 Suse versions this way and in the end I reinstalled everything and before I make a patch I make a copy.

Learning by doing................

Speaking of reinstall, I, personally reinstalled SuSE 9.3 on my laptop IBM about 5 time to make it to my liking. So, practice makes perfect
