A p3-700 will be just fine. I installed Damn Small Linux to my Toshiba Tecra 500CDT laptop that has a pentium I - 133 Mhz with no unusual problems. On this machine I was able to get X running with twm without any bells and whistles pretty good. It's mainly for surfing the web and e-mail and playing card games and word processing.

As far as a good wireless card, I use a DLink Air 802.11b 16bit card to work off my broadband connection just fine. I haven't heard about any 802.11g cards being overly successful yet.
