I don't know what Automatix is, but check that you have the folder /usr/lib/codecs and that it contains the codecs. You might also create a symlink /usr/lib/win32 that points to /usr/lib/codecs.
If those are not installed you can of course download the codecs yourself from the MPlayer website and move them to this location (/usr/lib/codecs).
To get error messages start a terminal window and start MPlayer from there. All error messages can be read in the terminal window if you fire it up this way.

Sorry to be of no assistance, but how did you install the application automatrix? From the depositaries or the terminal?

Automatix... Similar to EasyUbuntu... If you don't have Dapper or Edgy though, its a waste of time. It doesn't work with Breezy.

From your other post, I gathered you're using Breezy, you can try the FAQ below, and see if it helps you with the non-free codecs.

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu and reference 7.15. Like I said in your thread though, those repos might be closed now..

To the original poster...

I had a similar problem when I used Automatix to install non-free codecs...

Follow the FAQ's instructions for installing them, that did it for me.

If you're using Edgy(6.10)

If you're using Dapper(6.06)
