wlan suddenly stopped working ( ubuntu 8.10 )
hi, i am running ubuntu 8.10 and i havent ad any problems whatsoever, but in about a few days ago, my wlan stopped working..
i have tried everything(!) but i cant seem to fix it, i have even formatted the entire pc, and rreinstalled the os, so i am really out of answers to what to do next.. i am using a dell xps 1210, with a intel pro wireless card, broadcom chipset.. so, if anyone have a great solution for me, i would really appreciate it.. daniellos |
Did you by any chance do a kernel upgrade just before this happened? It would help to know what was done that caused the interface to stop working. Reinstalling the entire OS seems a bit drastic, unless something else happened that we don't know about.
As root, or using sudo, check: ifconfig This will tell you the status of any interfaces that might be working. iwconfig Provides status of any wireless interfaces. lspci Provides information on the pci hardware devices detected - your wireless NIC should be listed, unless it's USB, in that case try lsusb lsmod Will give you a very long list of installed modules. Your wireless driver should be listed. What driver are you using? |
thanks for the response, but i still don`t get why my wlan isn`t working..
and the bigger question is why did my wlan work from the getgo when i installed 8.10, but after it stopped working, and after my re-installation, it did not... anyways, when i type ifconfig: ## laptop:~$ ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:c5:44:4d:5f inet addr:10.0.0.6 Bcast:10.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::215:c5ff:fe44:4d5f/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:2510 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:2497 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:2194098 (2.1 MB) TX bytes:501943 (501.9 KB) Interrupt:17 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:142 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:142 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:12072 (12.0 KB) TX bytes:12072 (12.0 KB) ## does this mean that i dont have a active wlan card?? as it is not shown?? typing iwconfig: ## laptop:~$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wmaster0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 pan0 no wireless extensions. ## here it is right?? http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/?go=devices this will get you in the right direction . if you were using a ndis wrapper and 810 updated then that is a isuue start over. I will let you know the new kernels 2.6.24 and up have the old bcm43xx blacklisted. why it is not compatable with the new 32 bit runing 64 bit stuff. and I know yours worked before so I guess you better use the ndiswrapper.

Did you try it with any other operating sistem?

I am also running an dell xps, one day we had a small power bump and it somehow changed the last octet in my router by one digit, it had changed from 255 to 254. when it happened it said i was connected but i could not browse. i changed it back and everything was fine.
this is me thinking out loud |
wtf, hardware issue??
thanks for the response!!
but in my frustration i installed xp, and my wlan is still non-functional!! after that, (and after installing the drivers) i flashed the bios, and just when the pc was booting, the indicator for my bluetooth device lit up... when i got in, i shut down, and i have been trying to launch the wlan radio in every concieveble way, but it wont respond!! my question in this regards is, is it possible that a "kernel" or another "thingy" in ubuntu could have changed some of the hardware configuration in the extent that it affects my laptop regardless of OS`s?? or is it just my networking card that has finally dicided to have a breakdown after much beating.. =) oh, and yeah, i will try those links, but that won`t happen 2day!! g`night! daniel |
