wlan issue, Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

hi, first post, been using linux aprox 10-20 hours, half that time have been spent on reading and reaserching+exploring my wlan issue...

my problem is (of course), i can`t get online, infact, i don`t even know if my wlancard is active...

what i have found out is that i have a wlan card thats called:

Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

pc:

dell xps 1210

distro:

ubuntu 8.4 i believe... (8 something!!)

as far as i can tell, i do have the drivers in place, i typed;

vladidadi@ubuntu:~$ iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"" Nickname:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=27 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr: off Fragment thr=2346 B
Power Management: off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

but to be perfectly honest, i dont know how to activate my wlan, i am pretty convinced that i can control it with either the:

system-->administration-->networking tools-->network device path, -or-

system-->administration-->network-->network settings-->wireless connection-->properties path..

and every thinkable combo to follow up these obviously relevant moves..(in reference to the #%%&&¤??!! wlan. (pardon my alphanumerics)

but since i keep ending up with nothing even similar to a result, i can`t be sure...
and another thing, the wlan indicator doesent light up when i work my magic, (try every possible thingy, after my "paths") but then again.. i dont know if it is supposed to..

and i have read, a great deal.. relatively.. 50-50 theory-practice..

a reply in this matter would be of epic convinience to me, so if you may.. =)

Type in NetworkManager in a Terminal window. An icon should turn up in your system tray. From there you will be able to select the Access Point.

You could otherwise
iwlist wlan0 scan <-- To see the networks available.
iwconfig wlan0 essid 'accesspoint' <-- To connect to your wifi access point
dhclient wlan0 <-- Automatically get the IP.

Hope this helps :)

nope..

when i type NetworkManager in the terminal, this is what i get:

vladidadi@ubuntu:~$ NetworkManager
You must be root to run NetworkManager!
vladidadi@ubuntu:~$ sudo NetworkManager
vladidadi@ubuntu:~$

when i type iwlist wlan0 scan:

vladidadi@ubuntu:~$ iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

this is due to my wlan not being activated..? because there is a network in wich i easaliy can connect when i run xp..

i have embedded a network manager thingy in my "start bar", when i enter it, and choose wlano:avahi (the only wlan option) it states that it is disconnected.. but when i try to configure it either via the "general, or the "support" bar, i get the message:

the interface does not exsist..

got any more thingy`s for me to try out??

many thanks for the reply btw!!!

Try this.
Works (now) fine for me after this change.

that worked, at least my led-light is active, and that means that somethinh has changed.. lol

next step is finding the network, which i hope won`t be a prob!!

thanks again!
