Wireless won't turn on with Slackware 13.1

I have an ACER Travelmate 32600-4542. The original OS was windows XP. I installed Linux Mint 10.0. I ran that a little while and for some reason it was slow and would occasionally freeze for a few seconds at a time. I got sick of that and did a clean install of Slackware 13.1. The problem I am having now is the wireless won't come on. I try to switch the power switch and it will not turn on. I am fairly new to Linux and don't even know where to start to find out why it isn't turning on. I didn't have any problems with it turning on with Mint.

Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

Slackware is different in lots of ways from other more 'user friendly' distros but if you take the time to learn you'll get lots of advantages in return. The learning curve is 'a bit' steeper then for other distros so be prepared to do the necessary searching. Have a look at the following sites for your wireless problem. Have fun with Linux.

Kind regards,

I assume you are referring to the Fn + Function Key switch. Is there also a physical switch (my daughter's laptop has both)?

You could try installing wicd, it's located in extra.

If you have slackpkg setup properly you can install it from root as follows:

~# slackpkg install wicd

I will try the suggestions.

chrisretusn -- this model only has the physical switch, no Fn +
