Wireless Internet

Hi v1 I'm new to linux i just installed it couple of days ago and having trouble to connect to my wireless network..

irmin 02-10-2010 04:19 PM

More details? What distribution, what error messages or symptoms ...

reed9 02-10-2010 04:24 PM

Hello.

Please open a terminal and post the output of the following
Code:

lspci -vnn
lsmod
dmesg | grep firmware

And as above, which distribution are you running?

AMK 02-10-2010 04:33 PM

its Redhat 5 ..
when i try to configure it gives me error mess

cannot activate network device eth1
determining IP information for eth1 failed

reed9 02-10-2010 04:55 PM

Still need the info I requested. But since it's RHEL, you may need the full path for lspci
Code:

/sbin/lspci -vnn

Hmm, perhaps RHEL is different, but the lspci output should look more like this.

Code:

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:04b5]

        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: wl
        Kernel modules: wl, ssb

try as so
Code:

/sbin/lspci | grep -i net

AMK 02-10-2010 05:10 PM

00:08.0 Network controller: Intersil Corporation Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset (rev 01)

Never mind, this is the pci id for your card: 1260:3873

This uses the orinoco_pci driver, which is loading.

What is the output of
Code:

iwconfig

reed9 02-10-2010 05:21 PM

If you can walk us through a little more exactly how you are trying to setup the wireless, it would help. This card should be working from what I can see so far.

One thing I note, usually the interface would be called wlan0, not eth1, but that isn't always the case. The output of iwconfig will show what the interface is called.

After that try
Code:

su -
ifconfig eth1 up
iwlist eth1 scan

Change eth1 to wlan0 if iwconfig shows the interface as such.

Does the second command give a list of available networks?

AMK 02-10-2010 05:23 PM

when i try to post the output of iwconfig it gives me error mess

The wireless interface is really named wifi0?

Post the entire output of
Code:

dmesg
It will be long so use code tags.

schneidz 02-11-2010 12:57 PM

what is the name of the router you are trying to connect to (is it called test) ?
:
Code:

lspci # will tell us the pci devices you have in your system.
lsusb # will tell us the usb devices you have in your system.
ifconfig # will tell us what network interface cards you have on your system.
ifconfig -a
iwconfig # will tell us which of your network interface cards has wireless capability

sudo iwlist <network-card> scan # this will use the <network-card> interface (that from the iwconfig command above) and scan for wireless routers that are accessible.
sudo iwconfig <network-card> essid <your-router-name> # assuming no security (the access point names will be provided by the previous iwlist command).
sudo dhclient # will attempt to get ip-address, subnet mask, dns server information automatically from your router assuming dhcp is turned on on your router.

it would be easier for us to read if it is in [code] tags.
is there a way to disable those stupid smileys (not aimed at original poster -- that happens to me to) ?
