wireless drivers on dell inspiron 1150
Hello,
I am very new and totally not used to installing drivers in linux. I have installed linux maya 13 xfce on this old laptop,a Dell Inspiron 1150. So now I have only internet when I put in a cable, but there should be a possibility to use the wireless. Can someone help me out? |

Hi,
Welcome to LQ! Dell Inspiron 1150 specs do not show a wireless chipset. I would do a form cli as root; Code:
lspci -vv Please consider reading the following; Quote:

Dell likes Broadcom. If the command that onebuck suggests reports Broadcom wireless, this should help: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ux-4175434970/

Welcome to the forum :) The first thing I would highly recommend is to remove your email address from your first post lest your inbox starts overflowing with SPAM. ;) In reference to your wireless adapter, please open a terminal and post the output of... Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2 Code:

I have that exact laptop. Wifi does work. But not with the default firmware. I made a youtube video about it. More of a personal postit note than a howto though. Basically two things you need to know to sort things out.
It uses the b43 driver, NOT the b43legacy driver. Despite it's age an such. The default firmware does not work properly. default firmware: http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources...00.138.tar.bz2 You can acquire other firmware that does work though. other firmware: http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources...0.10.5.tar.bz2 And ofc, the youtube video I did about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIF-rqvBUHI Like I wrote, more of a post it note than a HowTo, but the important bits are there. |

Did you try Shadow 7's recommendations above? ;) Regards... |
transcribed version of your youtubevideo?
Thanks for your thread, great! So it is possible.
But being a dutch person and not an englishman, this is way beyond my skills, to get all these commands right from the youtube version. Perhaps it is possible you have the commands in text for me, that would be of great help :) Quote:

For debian.
Code:
# apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer Code:
$ mkdir temp Code:
# rm /lib/firmware/b43/* And then reboot for the simple module update. Or... ifconfig wlan0 down && modprobe -r b43 && modprobe b43 && ifconfig wlan0 up |
Wireless on DELL INSPIRON 1150
Thank you very much for the great help, all of you and especially Shadow 7. Will this also work on the Mate 17.2 version? |
Hi...
Excellent, sounds like you got it working. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do this for Mate, as well. :) If you would, please mark this thread as "SOLVED" by clicking on "Thread Tools" directly above your initial post. Thanks! Also, you might want to remove your email address in post #7 here. ;) Regards... |
It should work on mint. Although package names and firmware location might be different. But probably not. I don't know about your version but mine only has 512MB of RAM which limits your choices a bit. Depending on what you want to use it for.

BIG Thanks for the tips, I doubled the memory to 2 times 512; Nice!
