wireless cards

I have an IBM A22m thinkpad running mandriva linux 2008. I was just wondering what would be the best wireless card to buy. To have it actually run and be detected with linux :) and actual supported drivers. I ask this because I have a belkin card with absolutely no success. Thank you and any advise is greatly appreciated.

I have known nothing outside of Broadcom chipsets... unfortunately you'll either need to install the firmware (I'm not sure if Mandriva has any kind of fwcutter for bcm43xx-based cards or where to put it in Mandriva) or use ndiswrapper for them, so they don't usually work out-of-box (which I presume is what you're looking for). But they're good if you're willing to set them up.

Get atheros or prism based cards. Most certainly NOT broadcom, these are by far the most difficult cards out there to set up and use, just search the forums a bit. Pikidalto must be unlucky to have such a card.

For more cards and their support see here:

Also, remember that it's the chipset that matters, not the brand name.

I actually like my Broadcom chipset and found it quite easy to setup. All I did was ndiswrapper the driver, and voila, it worked. I also had someone teach me how to fwcut the firmware (which was simple once I learned how). It's just a matter of knowing how to use ndiswrapper or fwcutter (and where to put the firmware if you use fwcutter).

Here are the instructions for using Broadcom wireless adapters:

cisco cards work pretty easily.
