Wired: cable unplugged

Hello total Linux rookie here.

Installed 12.04 on an extra machine my brother just gave me. No network connection. Cable is plugged in, had connection with vista that I installed over.

Little slice of pie at the top right corner of the desktop is empty, tells me no network devices available.

Thanks for looking, I appreciate any help

This is usually the result of an unsupported network device, assuming it's not a bad cable or something.

As above suggests, the OS for some reason seems to be telling you an issue with the nic or the wrong nic or such. Linux may or may not have native support for it or you may have to add it or use windows drivers.

Lucky for you the Ubuntu distro website has a few good pages on now to fix networking. Poke around there. Use web search for terms like ubuntu network networking card.
