WinXP & Suse 9.3 Partitions

I wuld like to install a dual boot WinXP (existing) and SUSE 9.3. There is a Parted in the Suse installation disk that I would like to use in order to shrink my existing windows partition and create new partitions for Linux.
Will Parted keep the information in the Win partition or it's going to be deleted /damaged? I am a little bit anxious to procseed...

The parted manual can be found at http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/m...arted_toc.html

In general, you should always take a backup of any important data before resizing a partition, just in case something goes wrong. However, parted should be able to shrink FAT (not NTFS) filesystems without loosing data.

It's probably also a good idea to defragment your disk first.

The problem is that I can't use Parted manually before the installation from the installation disk, but during te installation trought the installation software. That's why I am not sure if it is even "intending" to save my existing data (I am mostly anxyous about many pragram files that it will be a head ache to reinstall).
There is a "confirm installation" message where written: "If you continue now, partitions on your hard disk will be formatted ... " Do they mean just to format the new partitions?

i might recommend Partition Magic... though it's not free... it's more reliable when dealing with NTFS
