winmodem problem

hi there, i still a newbie.
i have a ESS 56k voice modem which works well under Windows, but later on i know that my modem is not a modem- it's a winmodem.

any body can help me to make it work under RedHat 7.3. because i heard that windmodem can not actually work under linux, but there are some people told me that it CAN work under linux.
which one is true???

if it can really work , can anynbody guide me on making it work please!
if you have any other comments please post it as well.

thanks

Some winmodems work, most don't. Have a look at Linmodems.org and see if your chipset is on the winmodem list.

They're both right. Winmodems behave like normal modems when a driver is present on the computer to make it imitate the normal functions performed by a modem's hardware. Often, these drivers are only made for windows, giving software modems the name of "winmodems". There are some winmodems however that have linux drivers, and are therefore known as linmodems. Fun eh? ;)

What you need to do is find out the Manufacturer, name of the modem and chipset name then go to http://www.linmodems.org and search for it there. Failing that, take your modem information and search for linux drivers on google.

i managed to found out that my modem is not a linmodem. does that mean that i can't use my modem any more??

i am thinking that i want to buy an external modem(SwannSmart 56k V90) , but which modem should i buy(if you can, please mention the brand as well).

i heard about serial modem. what is actually the meaning of serial modem? is it mean that it has a 9 pin connector?

thanks for your advice guys- i appreciate it a lot

Everything Linux have internel and externel modems that work with linux. There store is in Five Dock.

I personally like external modems over internal because I know they have the parts needed to make it work like REAL modem unlike anything having to with M$. Really irks me that I spent years and $$$$$ of dollars on M$ crap and it all smoke and mirrors with them.
Hope this helps, by the way Hayes has a great external modem and it should work fine Linux.
