wine wont work :'(

resently ive been working with SuSE 10 which kicks ass but id like to be able to run 1 or 2 windows programs as wine seems to be one that worked on my mandrake system i tried to install it to SuSE 10. People say that Suse comes with it built in but ive tried running a few .exe programs and that wont work so i download wine and double clicked is and got a "open with" window. can someone tell what im doing wrong plz ! or give me other ways of running windows games / programs.

Remember this is linux; i.e., there are very few things that can be accomplished by simply "double-clicking." You are right though, that Suse comes with Wine, but that doesn't mean its configured correctly.

What kind of errors are you getting when you try to run the windows programs and which programs are they?

Try running
Code:
wine
from the command line and post the errors you've received.

I can't help you unless I can see what kind of errors you are receiving as an "open with" error is not really an error at all.

How exactly are you trying to run the .exe files? Are you using wine file.exe? Or graphically are .exe files associated with wine?

Also, is the windows program installed into a location that wine is mapped to? In ~/.wine/dosdevices you should have symlinks to the directories where you install them. The symlinks chould have names like dos drives: a:, c:, d: and so on.

If the exe isn't in one of those locations it will give you errors.

I just finished getting Wine running Diablo 2 a few days ago (after many hours :/ ).
I would recommend that you start small, make sure you can get Notepad working (probably one of the simplest programs). Build up from there.
And really really do check out the WineHQ documentation, it is pages and pages of useful stuff on creating your .wine folder, registry setup, etc.
Plus, as the poster above mentioned, Unreal Tournament 2004 has a native Linux version. If you don't have an installer, someone has packaged up quite a few installers, I forget the name of the site. Icarus or something?

Wine is included with the distribution, but it's not a part of the default installation. If you don't select it during the install, you can add it later via software management in YaST.

That said, I haven't messed with wine much since installing SuSE 10.0 as I've been busy doing other things. But, on an initial try just to get it set up, wine told me it could not create the ~/.wine profile directory, which seemed like a permissions problem but shouldn't have been. I tried doing it with root as well and got the same error. I manually created the directory and was able to start the process of configuration as normal. I just haven't done that yet because I need a lot of guidance to do so. In any case, that error confused me, and I still wonder what caused it.

As someone else said, winehq.org is a good resource. I used it to get wine working somewhat with my previous distro.
