wine troubles
 

Hey all, I´ve probably got a super easy fix but I don´t have a clue what I´m doing here. I´m trying to get WOW to run with wine, but can´t get my head around my problems.
As far as I know I´ve got the wine version wine-20050419-lfc3winehq . I´ve got no idea what this means, but I get the WOW installer saying I need a newer version of Windows. How do I change this so it acts as windows 98? (I´m following another websites instructions so far, but I´m stuck here).

First, try to install the "wintools" rpm, and run "winetools" to configure your system in Win98 mode.

Second, see if the "wineconsole" command can be used for your WOW app.

OK Downloaded the RPM and tried to install. Requires Xdialog. Downloaded that but now it has dependancies of libX11, libc, libdl, libgdk, libglib, libgmodule, libgtk, libm. How can I get all these in one go and install easily or do I have to install 1 at a time.

i'm pretty new but

i use fedora core 3 same as you and it has yum which is great in my opinion, it resolves dependencies when downloading/installing the package you want so look for the required rpm with (as su)

yum search "RPM_NAME_HERE"

if it finds it then get it with

yum install "RPM_NAME_HERE"

that should get the rpm and all their dependencies.

if you are using the standard repositories it's highly likely that they won't contain winetools however there are some excellent 3rd party repositories out there in the form of dag and freshrpms, google on setting them up as a repository (pretty simple), don't forget to install the pgp keys for them (yet more googling) and then do the above steps again.

Once that's done you can do

which winetools to find out where it is installed (if it installed to one of the places in path)

Others can offer better ways probably but this is how i would atleast try :)

By default, wine tries to behave like w98. If you want to change this behaviour, open your favourite file browser, enter
</path/to/your/home/directory/>.wine/
(reading, for example /home/jeff/.wine)
You should see a few files, among them one with the name config. Open this with a text editor, you will find the windows version setting in the first few lines (you need to uncomment the line in question to actually take effect).

Thanks for the replies guys. It helped alot. Winetools is installed now, but it´s not working with my version of Wine. I´m about to go and have a look and see if I can find an updated version. It just keeps going and going... Thanks again for your help, nearly there (I think).

Is there anything that I can use that will make wine work other than winetools?

PS. You were right, it was already set to win98, but the game is still saying it needs win98 or higher to run?

Still trying to figure this one out. Iḿ thinking now the only alternative must be to get an older version of wine to work with winetools.

There's a comparison chart on the wine page showing the versions of wine and which works best with wine tools, i got the latest Fedora Core 3 built RPm and they work fine together.
