WINE for LINUX and P2P's
 

I just switched over to LINUX and went with SUSE 9.2 Professional. I am completly lost and it is really making me mad. if someone could be nice and explain to me how I could do some stuff such as get wine to work it came preloaded and if there is a program for linux like dvd shrink so i can burn my dvd's and get a p2p to operate on my system.

One of the best Linux apps for burning CDs or DVDs is k3b.

The best advice I can give for setting up a p2p is to go to freshmeat.net and search for one; SuSE doesn't tend to include them in the distro IIRC but it does include some graphical front-ends. If nothing else, Freshmeat will tell you the names of the packages/executables you want to be interested in.

Using WINE depends on what you want to do with it. I recommend uninstalling the WINE that SuSE installs for you using You can then install a more recent version from www.winehq.org (SuSE doesn't tend to keep Wine up to date; there are frequent releases on winehq that give significant leaps forward. You're always best off with the most recent version.) Then follow the instructions there to set it up and get it working. In general, you can run to run progname.exe from the current directory.

DVDshrink
 

I dont think DVDshrink works under wine to copy the DVD and shrink at source. I use dvdbackup to rip the DVD to backup the whole dvd to a harddive, then use dvd shrink to get it to fit onto a disc. Burning is done with K3B.
Its not idea and it took me ages to get dvdbackup to compile, but i have had no coasters so far:)

u don't really need wine 'cos there are plenty of apps for linux that'll do the same as their win counterparts, as scoop98 said k3b is an EXCELLENT cd/dvd writing app. as for p2p software MLDonkey is in my opinion better than any p2p client you could find. It supports multiple protocols including kazaa, bittorrent,direct connect etc.

the only thing i could get working with wine was the installshield part of any windows apps :) after that the actuall apps wouldn't run, lol.

if u need something like MSOffice, Openoffice.org supports everything except MS Access.

for anything else search places like linux.tucows.com.
