i have a asus eee pc on linux i want shockwave on it but have been told i need to install wine first to get shockwave working.i went on wine web site but there are loads to download how do i know which one i need.
wine is a linux program which allows you to run windows programs in linux.
It will not support all programs equally well - you just have to try.
The wine website has a collection/statistic of programs which are known to work, but you will have to try - if yours is not listed that does not mean it will not work.

You need "wine" - a recent version - probably available to install without hassle using your distributions package-manager.
Then use wine to install and run the windows-program as if you where in windows.
There are not many programs available - just one: "wine" - but maybe different versions of it.
I have a question too Do you know what distro you are running? If so what version is it? Again what dyou mean by old? Is it like kernel 1.6.X old or RHEL 2 old?? Please some details.
how old is old? are we talking fedora core 1 old or pre kernel-2 old?
you dont say the distro you are using
EDIT: i see immortal beat me to this one
EDIT2: i just realised how similar these two posts are.....weird.
i dont know what distro im using i dont know how to find out i just know it has linux and mozzila firefox on it im trying so hard to get shockwave on it for my daughter but ppl say i need wine but i dont know what one i need its comes up a list to choose but i dont know what to click on as i have no idea what is on here or how to find out.
Run "uname -a" in a terminal and post the results. Please also use punctuation in future. Relatively long posts are difficult to read without it. Edit: you've started another thread for this problem. Please don't double post in future.
Not to sound condescending, the terminal is that black screen in linux. By typing the above command we shall see what linux kernel you are using thus getting us a step closer to helping you out.
In some other thread about wine you mention an eeePC you have. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-linux-665233/
The linux would be relatively recent then and the distribution would be xandros? AFAIK...
In that case: I can't help more than suggest to get a "real" linux distribution - because xandros is half (or fully?) commercial and not easy to extend with additional software.
That is the impression I got when I informed myself about it when trying to solve other members question about this eeePC and this version of linux.
If you don't know what version of Linux you have and you don't understand how to run a command in a terminal window then try pressing ctrl-alt-f3 at the same time. This should get you a text only login screen. Make a note of what it says there then press ctrl-alt-f7 to get back where you were.
