.Wine

Ok I just installed Suse 9.1 yesterday ... anyhow, here's the thing, I know you can emulate Software that is specfically for Windows using Wine (if that's wrong, please correct me  ) ... I NEED to use the following programs:

- FruityLoops Studio
- Sony ACID Pro 5.0
- Sony Soundforge 7.0
- Adobe Photoshop
- SwishMAX
- Macromedia Dreamweaver
- Macromedia Flash
- Cute FTP (or any FTP program for that matter)

Any way to have these progs run on Suse 9.1? Now is this at all possible? Like these are not just progs I want, I need them for side-work and such.

Please help out if you can,

Thanks.

I will say this with a word of caution. Yes, it probably is possible to get them to run under WINE. WINE is a Windows emulator. However, I personally have not had a lot of luck getting it to run many Windows programs. I also use Fruity Loops, and some of the programs you mentioned. Since I haven't had much luck with WINE, I still run a dual-boot system. I would take a look at WINEHQ, maybe that'll get you pointed in the right direction. Sorry I don't have more info for you.

Hi,

For the programs that don't work on Wine (once you've tried all of them), you may want to check out some Linux alternatives.

e.g:

Instead of Adobe Photoshop -> GIMP
Instead of Macromedia Dreamweaver -> Nvu or Bluefish (both are good)
Instead of Macromedia Flash -> Flash on Linux (pdf) and SWF Tools (sorry not really sure about Linux alternative to this one...)
Instead of Cute FTP -> gFTP
Instead of all your sound programs :p -> Lots of audio/video links! More audio/video links...There must be at least one good program there! Sweep is meant to be pretty good!!

Best of luck, and I hope they work on Wine!

Thanks for the input, and I will check out the info you gave ... lol it's not that I wont consider an alternative to any of the programs, it's that I already have so much work done in those certain programs, that its in their file format ... I can't really play with FL Studio or ACID Pro files in any other program other than their native progs.

Chromezero 06-22-2005 01:31 PM

Well said J_K9. I was being lazy and didn't want to add links to alternatives...

J_K9 06-22-2005 01:34 PM

lol tnx...I kinda had some trouble with the links originally (check out ilovelagar's quote of my post before I edited it!!)

I completely understand your problem ilovelagar, so you're probably better off either dual-booting or trying those programs in Wine. I have to say, Wine is getting better and better, and a couple of months ago Microsoft actually recognised it as a threat! :D That must mean it's working pretty damn well.........;)

Dual-Booting?! ... :tisk: ... lol i'm so used to working on FL Studio and being on MSN at the same time and stuff like that ... dual-boot ... might as well just use XP alone ...

J_K9 06-22-2005 01:50 PM

Hey no-one said that FL Studio doesn't work on Wine. Plus, Gaim is 50 million times better than MSN Messenger. Dual-booting isn't at all complicated once you've done it once, and even the first time it's not really that difficult. Yet, if you truly want to return to the horrible monstrosity that Microsoft calls "an operating system", nobody's stopping you.

I wish I could get more things to work under WINE but I'm still kinda new to Linux. The progams that J_K9 mentioned are all great programs. I'm learning Gimp and I'd say it's as good or better than anything I have for Windows. However there are some programs, like Fruity Loops, that I can't find a Linux version of. Or not one that is compatible with the files anyway. I'm sure it can be run through WINE, it's just that I personally can't get it to work.

ilovelagar 06-22-2005 07:51 PM

i may have misunderstood "dual-booting" ... :o ... being a newbie ... please explain it ... does it mean that when I turn my computer on i have the option to boot either XP or Suse ... or does it mean I can boot both, and switch at any time, kind of like a "alt+tab" thing ... I know this is a stupid question but ... :o ... lol please help

Chromezero 06-22-2005 08:32 PM

Dual booting is having SuSE and Windows both installed on your hardrive. When you boot up, using either LILO or Grub, you would choose to either boot windows or Linux. If you wanted to switch from one OS to the other, you'd have to reboot.

Find a program that you like at http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/.

I just found this the other day. I haven't had a chance to give it a test drive, but it looks pretty similar to FLStudio. I thought you might be interested...
