windows xp and linux files on external drive

Hello,

I am very new to Linux and working with it the best I can. I am working on getting my External hard drive to with Mandrake Linux 10.0. The drive is in NTFS format. The problem I am having Linux sees the drive and can open it. But it shows no files. I open the drive in windows and all the files are there. The drive in windows show up as e: and in Linux /mnt/external. Is there any way to correct this problem. So I can see the windows file on Linux in the external drive?

Thanks
Mike

man10.0lin,

You will have to mount the external hard drive with a different umask value.

Code:
mount -o umask=000 /dev/device /mnt/external
The above should work, but you might want to play around with the umask value a bit to suit your preference.

Let me know how you go.

Cheers,
-Kristijan

Still no go.

Hello Kristijan,

Thanks for your post. I tried what you said. I logged into root account. Then typed the command and it came with permission denied. I do not understand why? Also I looked at the partition info. The partition shows up as mnt/external and not a NTFS drive? Any idea on how to change that?

Thanks again

Mike

Also

I looked under the hardware settings. It says something about no modules? I don't understand? It sees the drive and can open. Just can't see the NTFS partition (files) Only partition it sees is the mnt/external.

But I know the partition is there because windows sees it.

Thanks again

Mike
