Hello all,

I am new to Linux world. I am an experienced Windows Admin.

How can i learn Linux. any books or just trail and error.?

What is the best OS to install.

I downloaded Fedora core 12 cd's and burned them but the disk are not working, the checksum is corrupt.

Any idea where to get good linux OS's.

Hi Fedora 12 is good. Could be an error on the burn itself. Try again. DVD-RW is good for this. Then you can re-use the same DVD when they upgrade.

Trial and error is probably best. There is of course this forum and the Linux Documentation project. Also various magazines, e.g http://www.linux-mag.com/ and http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/

"Best" is a relative term. All Linux systems perform the same ways, but differ in some aspects. It depends on two things: what you're trying to do, and what you LIKE. Fedora, openSUSE, CentOS, Debian, and Mandriva are all good distros, among many. Pick one, or try them all.

And as far as how you can learn, you can go buy books, use Google, or ask questions. How did you learn Windows, since you are "a experience" admin?
You get them from whatever site you pick. Get Fedora from Fedora's site...openSUSE from the openSUSE site, etc. Google can point you to each one, and you can check distrowatch for others. Also, you asked about the checksum issue in another thread, and have already received a reply there. Might also want to provide details, instead of just saying "not working". Can't diagnose a problem with no information...

Here is a good tutorial download and learn from it.

Any of the top five in this site can be an easy install for learning and use.

You will only need to redownload it again. Use torrent downloading. There is a windows torrent downloader called "rtorrent" for the start use it.

Try Linux Mint, get it from here.

I downloaded the DVD image for i386 using the torrent link from the fedoraproject.org site.

i have two files in the downloaded folder an iso and checksum file.

When i run the sha1sum Fedora-12-i386-dvd.iso the check sum that is displayed doesn't match the checksum in the checksum file.

Does it mean i have to redownload again. ??


This is my 4th attempt to down the Fedora iso file and it always downloads fine, but when i boot the disc and check the disk it fails.

I would recommend bittorrent to download.. you can always Re-check files

torrent.fedoraproject.org

Also if you don't want BitTorrent I would at least recommend a real download manager, not FF or IE's built-in ones.

What does Re-checking prove.

Can i burn the image to the disc, if the rechecking doesn't error.

I am using Bittorrent.

Burn as slow as possible - this seems to help in some cases.
Also, there's a lot(!) of manuals/books/howtos you can read for free here : www.linuxtopia.org.
Note that Fedora is Redhat's R & D distro & is therefore bleeding edge/unstable and a new version comes out every 12 mths.
If you want a long term stable distro, try Centos (free version of RhedHat Enterprise Linux aka RHEL).

could be nothing wrong as Fedora uses shasum 256and most bruners don't check it right

It compares the downloaded file (ISO file on your drive) to that of the source original. If there is variance or they are different the checksum will return a different set of integers. If the copied file is an exact copy from the original (no flaw) the checksum will return an exact set of integers or numbers.

Yes, you may proceed to burn and use it after checksum assured that the copy contained NO ERROR. As "chrism01" said: burn as low as possible, and do not disturb the burner app while doing the work.

If the checksum is not equal to the original you should download it again. Torrent download is the safest way, so far to my experience, and bittorrent is the most reliable and simple software for this work.
