Question Windows Network shortcut does not work

Hello all. I am not sure what I have done so thought I would ask the pros. I installed my first (Linux Mint 18.3) os onto an acer laptop(4Gb ram). Everything seemed to work just fine. To try another Linux os (mx-17) I installed it. Everything worked here except the Windows Network shortcut in Thunar does not work(I eventually get a timeout error). I discovered that I could type the address of the shared location into Thunar's toolbar and it connects just fine. So, being a curious fellow, I reinstalled Linux Mint thinking maybe it was MX-17. Alas now the problem existed there as well. I have since tried Manjaro, Linux Lite, Debian Stretch and the problem exists in all. So, now I'm thinking it has something to do with the laptop but I don't have a clue as to how or what to check. I would like to stay with MX-17 for a while. So, can anyone give me some help? I have googled the answer, gone on a couple of other forums but no joy.
thx

If I understood you correctly, you're saying that network discovery isn't working as expected, but that when you enter a specific address pf a Windows (or samba) server, the shares are accessible. Samba network discovery relied on the very insecure NT1 (SMB1) protocol, which is no longer enabled by default. It can enabled as explained here (but be aware of the security implications)....

https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...smbtree#453951
*In particular, refer to potential issue #2 and also check your firewall (to make sure samba broadcasts are not being blocked)

IIRC, the smbtree CLI utility still utilizes NT1 to find shares
Code:
smbtree

SMB1 - ransomware friendly - your choice!

Replace those devices that still utilizes SMB1 it's worth the investment, IMHO.

I totally agree: Security over convenience any day!

Yep - The NSA certainly took away the convenience of SMB1.
