Windows - Equivalents
I have used Windows a couple of years now and I want to switch to Linux. I have the Yoper Distro, and I want to know, if someone has used both Linux and Windows, what do I go to in Linux that would be like My Computer in Windows, and show my hard drive and disk drives? My first thought was "Home" but I never see my floppy or cd drives there. Does there have to be a cd in for it to show the drive? Or maybe I don't have drivers for those devices and it just isn't telling me? In Windows, I use Device Manager to locate problems with drives and to view drivers for each. Is there a similar utility with Yoper Linux? Also, why is it so impossible to find a place in Yoper that I can set my resolution? I can see that it is currently 1024x768 but I like better resolutions and using my video card to its true potential. Where can I change that? I just need someone who has used both Windows and Linux to explain these things to me. Thanks.

Welcome to the learning curve.
Linux needs a different mindset than Windows. Perhaps these can explain. # Managing drives LNAG - Accessing my drives Rute - Device Mounting # Configuring X Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO - video cards The Linux XFree86 HOWTO Common X configuring tools: Debian - dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 Mandrake - XFdrake Redhat 7.3 down - the setup utility leads to several config tools Redhat 7.3 up - redhat-config-xfree86 You may have these tools: XF86Setup XFree86 -configure Xconfigurator xf86cfg xf86config xconf ATI Linux drivers If you need the nVidia driver, most likely, you want the Linux IA32 driver |
