Windows chat client communicates with Linux server chat application

i want to setup a linux chat server and i want the clients to be windows.since i have not done it before can any one help me in this regards.can someone tell me which software should i use. and how to configure it. my need is only for internel chating

Welcome to forums.
I would go for private IRC server. mIRC can be used on clients and IRCd as server. It might be a little difficult to set up initially but with plenty of online documentation it'll be a good learning experience.
