Windows 7 won't boot after I installed and deleted Ubuntu 10,10
 

Okay, i am relatively new to linux, but i have used it before on previous computers. So i got this new computer with Windows 7 on it and promptly installed Ubuntu 10.10. it didn't recognize my graphics card or screen, and i was too lazy to figure it out. (xorg.conf was missing?) anyway, I went back to windows and deleted the partition that linux was on. When i reboot the computer, all it shows is "grub rescue>" and a command line.
as you can probably tell by my writing, i am a teenager who lives under my parents' roof and they bought me this computer, and now it doesn't work...so i used my backup disk and i reinstalled windows back to factory settings, and it still shows up with a grub command line. so does this mean that my win os is misplaced or something..help please?
Also, i don't know if this is even relevant to this website, but since it was involving linux i thought i'd post my it in this forum.
I don't know if this matters, but i have a Gateway with Intel Pentium dual-core processor.

If I'm not mistaken, you can run your windows install disk in repair mode. Run fixmbr to overwrite the MBR (master boot record) which still has part of the grub bootloader from Ubunuto.

Search these forums for posts about fixmbr for more information.

You need to restore the M$oft MBR (master boot record). Read this technote - you need "bootrec /fixmbr".
Hope you have better luck with Linux next time.

Do you just have restore disc or do you have installationn disc.
When you installed ubuntu you indtslled grub to mbr.
You have quite a few options.
The easiest is to reinstall ubuntu, let it find wins7.

i have a restore disk i made when i first bought the computer, win7 was oem, preinstalled.

yes if you're going to continue with linux on dual-boot system. It'll automatically find wins 7 before reboot.

i reinstalled ubuntu and now when i restart, nothing shows up. except for a black screen with the dash on the upper left corner. and it's been on that for around ten minutes now.

You haven't messed with the BIOS have you?

BTW don't worry about this - if you have the rescue disk you will get win7 working again, promise. Where there's a will there's a way.

i would do a clean install, but i don't have an installation disk (i have a recovery disk). somehow i have to fix mbr without the disk.

i've used the recovery disk, and supposedly it's back to factory settings, but when i boot up, it's still the black screen/flashing cursor deal. ah, so.
Haven't touched the actual BIOS. except for change the boot sequence to boot from the cd when i installed linux.

I'm no expert on Windows but if you install Ubuntu (or practically any other user-friendly linux distro) into a separate partition it should find your windows partition when it configures lilo/grub, giving you a choice of windows or ubuntu when you boot up. There should be no need for you to reinstall windows boot manager into MBR.

When you reinstalled Ubuntu did it go Ok? any errors?

And a bootable USB or DVD for Ubuntu 10.10, correct?

Q: You can successfully boot to Ubuntu 10.10, correct?

SUGGESTION:
1. DON'T "reinstall" anything. Focus on getting Ubuntu's "grub2" working so that you can see both Windows and Ubuntu.

2. Look at these two links:

3. Please REBOOT your PC from hard drive.
Please see if you get a "grub2" menu before it goes into Ubuntu.
Please verify you can log into Ubuntu.

The actual reinstallation of Ubuntu went well, but when i rebooted, for some reason, the gui didn't load. xorg.conf was missing. haha
anyway, last night it was working and it provided a choice of operating systems to boot ie, win7, ubuntusafemode, ubuntu, etc.
today i turned on my computer and black screen. ubuntu and win7 are currently on my system.

Unfortunately, i can't successfully boot to ubuntu, or anything. the disk i have is the win7 backup/recovery disk. not the installation.
