Window Focus with Mouse Click

Hello,
I am having this trouble with both CentOS 6.5 and Redhat 6.
Even during the installation process, if I go anywhere off the beaten path (into the options menus), I can no longer click on buttons to make selections. I have to tab my way through options and press the spacebar.

Now, I am in CentOS and everything looks fine and then I open gedit to look at a file. But now gedit has my mouse's focus and I can not click in other parts of the UI to do other things. Clicking on other UI elements produce no response. I'm pretty sure I can't even click on the menu bar of gedit. I CAN select text within gedit.

I have tried changing mice.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Okay, I have narrowed down my problem:
When I click within gedit, I can't click anywhere else to do anything except click on text within gedit.
If I click on the gedit menu bar, it is like a magic bridge where I can then click on other elements of the UI.

Unacceptable. Please tell me this is a bug or a setting.
Thank you!
