Exclamation will not find wireless networks

I have an HP Netbook that has Linux Mint

I have absolutely no issues with a wired connection, however my internal wireless will not search and find wireless networks in range. It appears I have one saved (my home network) and I can connect to that, however, if I take my laptop to school or work, it will not find any networks to connect to.

On a side note, I have no icon on the taskbar indicating wireless, and I used to have one. I have no idea where it went or what happened.

Can someone please help with this, I can answer most questions you may have but im a relatively new linux user (but I have a coworker that "knows all" and could help answer a question that I cannot.

Check to see if you have wireless networking enabled. Right click on the wired networking icon. Should be located near your clock. Check the checkbox that says "Enable Wireless" after enabling wireless if you left click you should have wireless networks (as long as you are in range).

hope that helps.

a. i do not have a wired icon
b. it must be enabled because as soon as i am home, even though there is no icon, it auto connects to my wireless router at home.

the problem is anywhere other than my home, unless i hardwire (which will not show anything, it just connects) i have no capability to access a wireless network.
