i dont no if this is how i post a question but COULD YOU PLEASE help a newbie running on windowsxp(error machiene) at the moment downloading LINUX would you please tell me if my PC games would work on linux based systems.MATT

Games like tony hawk UNDERGROUND 2.

usaf_sp 11-13-2005 11:06 AM

The general answer is: NO your windows games WILL NOT work.

There are ways to get some windows programs working by using:

1. Wine- (Most games do not work).
2. TransGaming Cedega (uses DLLs and APIs specific to gaming, has better success of running games).

Please understand that Linux is a totally diferent OS and is not intended to run windows programs natively. Some will run, but most will not.

what is the best linux that all most programs will work on

usaf_sp 11-13-2005 01:30 PM

I just answered your question. Linux as a rule will NOT run windows programs. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

You should really start to read the distro reviews before posting questions that could be answered there. All your questions would be answered there. You can find the link in the right side of your browser.

I think that this thread has gotten off the point. If you have more specific questions than "where can I download Linux", you should start your own threads.

Recent posts removed from the thread they were in. It looks much better in a separate thread.

Transgaming's Cedega is used to try and run Windows games on Linux. As mentioned above not all will work. You can see which one's do (and how well they work) here: http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/

If you downloaded the Linux distro from the internet then generally its legal to copy it. Some of the distros that come in boxed sets may not be strictly legal to copy as they often contain non-open source software like Java, Flash and NVIDIA drivers.

Then your brother probably doesn't know much about Linux ;) There are plenty of newbie-friendly distros that make things graphical and easy.

So probably not, but Linux has its own photo editing programs (eg. The GIMP).

There is no 'best Linux' but if you want one that's user-friendly and has plenty of software packaged for it try OpenSuse, Mandriva, Ubuntu, MEPIS or something like that.
